Η Δρ Κοντάρη αποφοίτησε από την Ιατρική Σχολή UMF της Craiova το 1997 με βαθμό Αριστα (9.35) και αναγνώριση από την Ιατρική Σχολή Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών.

Από το έτος 1992 εως 2000 ασκεί υπηρεσία υπαίθρου αρχικά στο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Ναυπλίου και κατόπιν στο περιφερειακό ιατρείο Ερμιόνης Αργολίδος (Κ.Υ.Κρανιδίου)ενω παράλληλα ασχολείται με την παράδοση του μαθήματος Υγιεινής στην Σχολή Τουριστικών Επαγγελμάτων.

Από το 2000 -2001 ως ειδικευόμενη οφθαλμολογίας στο Γενικό Νοσοκοεμίο «Παίδων Πεντέλης» εκπαιδεύεται στην αντιμετώπιση παιδοοφθαλμολογικών περιστατικών και συμμετέχει ενεργά σε χειρουργικές επεμβάσεις κυρίως στραβισμού, καθετηριασμού δακρυϊκού πόρου κ.α

Το χρονικό διάστημα 2002-2005 εργάζεται στο Ινστιτούτο ̈ ΟΦΘΑΛΜΟΣ ̈ -Νοσ Υγείαμε αρμοδιότητες στο διαθλαστικό τμήμα, συμμετέχοντας στην προεγχειρητική μελέτη των διαθλαστικών επεμβάσεων με laser και στο τμήμα γλαυκώματος (οπτικό πεδίο, HRT-II tomography).

Το 2006-2009 ολοκληρώνει την εκπαίδευση της στην ειδικότητα της οφθαλμολογίας στο Γενικό Κρατικό Νοσοκομείο Νίκαιας «Αγ.Παντελεήμων». Το διάστημα αυτό αποκτά εμπειρία στην χειρουργική επέμβαση του καταρράκτη , στην αντιμετώπιση επειγόντων οφθαλμολογικών περιστατικών καθώς και στην παθολογία του οπισθίου ημιμορίου (φλουοροαγγειογραφία, OCT ωχράς, ενδουαλοειδικές εγχύσεις).

Εχει συμμετάσχει ως εκπαιδεύτρια σε κλινικά φροντιστήρια και wetlab courses για την σύγχρονη χειρουργική του καταρράκτη και φακοθρυψίας από μικροσκοπική τομή, έχει επίσης συντονίσει ζωντανά χειρουργεία φακοθρυψίας κατά την διάρκεια οφθαλμολογικών συνεδρίων της Ελληνικής Εταιρείας Ενδοφακών και Διαθλαστικής Χειρουργικής.

Το επιστημονικό της έργο περιλαμβάνει δημοσιεύσεις σε Οφθαλμολογικά συνέδρια στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό με θέματα κυρίως διαθλαστικής χειρουργικής.

Η Δρ Κοντάρη Ιωάννα ιδιωτεύει στην Αθήνα ως επιστημονική συνεργάτης τουLaservision όπου ασκεί το κλινικό της έργο.
